Solar Thermal
Solar thermal is the cheapest form of alternative energy as collecting the suns UV rays within either a tubular or flat plate collector it can produce free energy in large quantities throughout the summer and supplementary energy through the winter periods. Mainly used on domestic hot water, but can be integrated into space heating.
Advantages -
- Economical to install
- Can be installed in various locations, e.g. pitched or flat roofs, vertical walls
and on the ground - Free energy
- No noise
Disadvantages -
- Needs to be installed in either south, south west or south east aspects only
- In preservation areas this system can be met with objections
- If the system has been sized incorrectly there is a danger that it could either be stood dormant, or overheat
Planning permission
From 6th April 2008 new Government legislation rules that, unless within a conservation area or on a listed building, the installation will not require planning permission and will be classed as permitted developments.
